After graduating from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, at Hokkaido University, she worked in pharmacological research at the Central Research Institute of Ajinomoto Co.. She resigned in 1998 to work as a veterinarian for an Indian NGO. After returning to Japan in 2000, she worked in practice at an international cooperation NGO while completing her doctoral studies at the Graduate School of International Social Development, Nihon Fukushi University. After completing her Ph.D., she began working on community-based learning/service learning as a faculty member at Volunteer Center, Waseda University in 2010 and has been working at the Institute for General Education, Ritsumeikan University from 2016 to the present.
She continues her research, practice, and teaching on social development in the South Asian and Japanese regions, especially in rural areas. She sees Community-Based Learning/Service Learning as one way of social development.
