Joan is an Associate Professor of the Practice in Spanish and Director of Duke Service-Learning at Duke University. Her research interests include community-engaged pedagogies and intercultural communicative competency. She co-authored Community-based Language Learning: A Framework for Educators (2019) to highlight best practices for building ethical and authentic partnerships between local communities and language learners.
