Dr. Debbie Mitchell is the curator of the Founders Memorial Garden at the University of Georgia College of Environment and Design and an academic professional associate faculty member. She is part of UGA's Faculty Learning Community on Service-Learning Scholarship & Research and was a 2022-23 Service-Learning Fellow at UGA. Prior to joining the CED, she held positions as education coordinator and curator at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and AmeriCorps VISTA working with school gardens. She brings more than twenty years of experience as an environmental educator, classroom science teacher and professional gardener. Her doctoral research focused on pragmatism and school gardens, specifically on how experiences in gardens and the outdoors can merge scientific understandings with environmental stewardship and social justice. A recent UGA Service-Learning Fellow, she now enjoys melding her past experiences with service-learning opportunities for students and community members in the Founders Garden.
