Atsuko Kuronuma joined the Department of Education and Language Education as an Assistant Professor by Special Appointment at International Christian University (ICU), Tokyo, Japan, in April 2023. Having been involved in international and community service-learning at ICU, as a staff member, program coordinator, and part-time lecturer for 13 years, from 2007 to 2019, she has developed relationships with partner universities in Asia, including China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and India, for service-learning exchange programs.
Atsuko is completing her doctoral dissertation, a comparative study of service-learning and community engagement in higher education. Inspired and informed by her work experience at ICU, her research examines how service-learning can be institutionalized as an educational practice that promotes undergraduate civic learning. Atsuko is the founding member and Vice Chair of the Japan Service-Learning Network, a network among scholars and practitioners of Japanese higher education, and is actively promoting service-learning in Japan.
